Data coverage and completeness

NZRIS relies on data supplied by funders and research organisations. Data availability and completeness for research undertaken prior to the launch of NZRIS varies across providers and is dependent on how data was collected and reported at the time of funding, particularly in regard to non-mandatory fields. It is envisaged that over time, data quality and completeness will improve and that data providers will be able to provide more information.

NZRIS aggregates provider-submitted metadata on New Zealand research funding, projects, participants and outputs, standardised to NZRIS specifications and definitions. As with all information systems, NZRIS provides structured representations of reported activity rather than a definitive or exhaustive account of the research system as a whole.

NZRIS is not a measure of research quality or impact, and coverage varies over time and across providers. 

Absence of a record does not necessarily mean absence of activity; it may reflect phased onboarding, optional fields, submission cycles, protection settings, or data not yet supplied.

Interpreting NZRIS data

Outputs recorded in NZRIS are not indicators of quality or impact.

Funding amounts reflect reported allocations per the data model and may not align with audited financials. Consult original funder sources where precision is required

NZRIS data should be interpreted with appropriate caution, particularly where coverage, classification, or reporting completeness may influence conclusions drawn from aggregated views.

NZRIS does not assess the scientific quality, significance or societal impact of projects or outputs; it records descriptive and administrative data only. Absence of a record should not be taken as absence of activity.

Data timing and growth

Because submissions occur on cycles and protection settings may restrict publication, NZRIS is not a complete or real‑time census of all New Zealand research activity.

NZRIS is designed to expand progressively over time, with more organisations joining as data providers and contributing additional datasets that enhance the overall picture of New Zealand’s research system.

As onboarding occurs in phases and providers differ in their readiness to supply the full range of required fields, some data may be incomplete or temporarily absent — not because the activity didn’t occur, but because the organisation is not yet participating in NZRIS or is still working toward providing all mandatory and optional elements.

This staged growth reflects how NZRIS relies on funders and research organisations to submit data, and how completeness varies until the system reaches full maturity.
