Help improve NZRIS

The quality, completeness and timeliness of NZRIS information reflect the collective effort of participating organisations and the NZRIS team. Continuous improvement depends on shared commitment to clear standards, validation, and refinement over time.

Becoming an NZRIS information provider helps reduce duplicate reporting and improve the quality and visibility of research activity. It enables organisations to contribute to a trusted, system-wide view of New Zealand’s research and innovation landscape, while benefiting from consistent standards and opportunities to reuse their own data.

Process for providing information

Research funders, universities, public research organisations, and others go through the following process to provide NZRIS with information.

1 Extract

Providers extract information on the government funding they have received and/or research they have undertaken from their own internal systems.

This includes details on the work that has been reported as completed, under way, or funded, and high-level information that describes reported research activity and outputs associated with those projects.

It does not include their full research papers, datasets, peer reviews, nor does it contain raw scientific results.  

2 Format

Providers format this information following the NZRIS Specifications and Data Dictionary — a national data and information standard that instructs providers on what information to provide, how to structure it and how to name things consistently to ensure that everyone speaks the same 'data language'. 

3 Submit

Providers submit this information to NZRIS through MBIE following a secure and controlled process.  

On submission, NZRIS checks for missing, inconsistent and duplicate information, and for any mismatches against the NZRIS specifications, flagging anything found for correction.

Once validated, the information is published, becoming accessible for the public to freely explore.

All information is submitted to NZRIS with an associated protection status that determines whether it can be published or must be restricted due to confidentiality, commercial sensitivity or privacy reasons. NZRIS manages the information it holds in line with these protection settings and relevant privacy and data management obligations.
